AD

AEScripts Font Animator v1.1.23 is an After Effects script for animating the font itself, rather than merely animating the position, scale, opacity, or other properties of text.

Its main trick is allowing multiple fonts to exist and animate inside a single editable text layer. You can sweep a font across text, randomly assign fonts to characters, replace characters with glyphs from another font, or change fonts using layer markers.

The current v1.1.23 release was initially released on August 11, 2026.

What is Font Animator?

Normally, changing fonts dynamically in After Effects is awkward. You might need multiple text layers, expressions, duplicated layers, or complicated text animators.

Font Animator approaches the problem differently:

One editable text layer → multiple fonts → animated font changes

The text remains a normal After Effects text layer, so you can still edit the wording after creating the animation.

It provides four main modes:

  1. Range
  2. Random
  3. Replace
  4. Marker

Range Animator

The Range Animator lets you sweep one font across a text layer.

For example, imagine:

MOTION DESIGN

You could have the original font remain unchanged while another font progressively moves across the text:

MMOMOTMOTIMOTIOMOTION

The font itself travels through the text character by character.

You can animate:

  • Start
  • End
  • Offset

and apply the range to:

  • Characters
  • Words
  • Lines

You can also use exact character indexes or percentage-based ranges.

Loop Offset

Range Animator includes Loop Offset, allowing the font sweep to continuously cycle through the text.

That’s useful for:

  • Looping typography
  • Background animation
  • Music visuals
  • Experimental titles
  • Kinetic typography

Random Font Animation

The Random mode is probably the most visually interesting option for experimental typography.

You create a pool of fonts, and Font Animator randomly assigns them to characters, words, or lines.

For example:

HELLO WORLD

could become something like:

H in Helvetica
E in Times
L in Futura
L in Impact
O in Garamond

while remaining a single editable text layer.

Control the Amount of Randomization

The Coverage control determines how much of the text participates in the effect.

You can therefore have:

  • 20% of characters changing
  • 50% changing
  • 100% changing

rather than having the entire sentence randomly transformed.

Animate the Randomization

The font pool can also reshuffle over time.

This can produce:

  • Glitch typography
  • Rapid font changes
  • Experimental title animations
  • Digital-style typography
  • Music-video typography

You can also control the random Seed, allowing you to find a particular combination you like.

Per-Font Controls

This is an important detail.

Each font in the random pool gets its own controls for:

  • Size
  • Tracking
  • Color

These properties are exposed through After Effects Effect Controls and can be keyframed.

So you’re not merely switching typefaces.

You can make different fonts behave differently.

For example:

Font A: 100% size, tight tracking
Font B: 120% size, wide tracking
Font C: 90% size, different colour

This can produce much more designed-looking typography.

Random or Sequential

The fonts don’t have to be randomly distributed.

Font Animator can also step through the font pool in order.

That gives you two very different styles:

Random

Font A → Font C → Font B → Font A → Font D

Sequential

Font A → Font B → Font C → Font D

Sequential switching is particularly useful for deliberately rhythmic typography.

Character Filtering

You can also specify which characters participate in the animation.

You can:

  • Include specific characters
  • Exclude specific characters

For example, you could keep all numbers unchanged while allowing only letters to change.

That is useful for things such as:

2026 / MOTION DESIGN

where you might want MOTION DESIGN to animate while 2026 remains fixed.

Marker Controls

The animation can also be confined between layer markers.

This lets you define exactly where an effect begins and ends in the timeline.

This is particularly useful for syncing typography to:

  • Music beats
  • Voice-over
  • Cuts
  • Scene changes
  • Animation cues

Instead of hunting through keyframes, you can simply move the markers.

Replace Mode

The Replace mode goes beyond changing fonts.

It actually changes the characters themselves.

You can replace letters with:

  • Symbols
  • Icons
  • Arrows
  • Dingbats
  • Box-drawing characters
  • Characters from another alphabet
  • Glyphs from another font

For example:

HELLO

could temporarily transform into a sequence of symbols before revealing the final text.

This is particularly useful for:

  • Decoding effects
  • Glitch transitions
  • UI-style graphics
  • Typography reveals
  • Logo animations
  • Experimental motion graphics

Built-In Glyph Keyboard

Replace mode includes a built-in glyph keyboard that lets you choose available characters from the selected font.

This is useful because fonts can contain hundreds or thousands of unusual glyphs that aren’t immediately accessible from a normal keyboard.

You can therefore use the font as a source of graphic symbols rather than simply as a typeface.

Find and Replace

Replace mode can work either through a moving range or by finding a specific word.

The Find functionality means the effect can continue to work even if you later rewrite the line.

That’s a useful feature for templates.

For example, you could create an effect targeting:

SALE

and later change the actual text without rebuilding the entire animation.

Replacement Gap Controls

When replacement text is shorter than the original text, Font Animator gives you several ways to fill the resulting gap.

You can:

  • Repeat the replacement
  • Leave it blank
  • Use a custom symbol
  • Use a scramble effect

The scramble option is particularly useful for digital or hacking-style typography transitions.

Marker Animator

The Marker Animator allows you to change the font at specific points in time using layer markers.

For example:

0:00 → Font A
0:02 → Font B
0:04 → Font C
0:06 → Font D

Move the marker and the font transition moves with it.

Each marker-controlled font can have its own:

  • Size
  • Tracking
  • Bold
  • Skew
  • Colour

This makes it particularly convenient for beat-synchronized typography.

One Text Layer

This is arguably Font Animator’s biggest technical advantage.

The plugin does not:

  • Convert text to shapes
  • Outline the text
  • Split every character into separate layers
  • Bake the animation
  • Destroy editability

Everything remains inside one standard After Effects text layer.

That means you can still:

  • Change the wording
  • Change the font
  • Add normal AE text animators
  • Precompose the layer
  • Parent it
  • Continue editing the text

This is a much cleaner workflow than generating dozens of individual character layers.

Non-Destructive Workflow

Font Animator is explicitly designed to remain live and non-destructive.

If you change the text later, the animation follows the new characters. You can also change the font, retime the animation, or remove the Font Animator effect without permanently modifying the underlying text layer.

That’s particularly valuable for:

  • Client revisions
  • Localization
  • Motion templates
  • Social media versions
  • Title packages
  • Broadcast graphics

Font Library Browser

The Font Animator panel can search your installed font library and display fonts in their actual typefaces.

You can see:

  • Font families
  • Weights
  • Styles

directly in the panel before selecting them.

This is a much nicer workflow than repeatedly switching fonts through After Effects’ normal Character panel.

Any After Effects Language

Font Animator is designed to work with After Effects in any language.

The script uses the fonts installed on the system, just like ordinary After Effects text.

One important limitation is that anyone opening the project needs the same fonts installed if those fonts are used by the composition.

Use Cases

Kinetic Typography

Font Animator is particularly well suited to kinetic typography where the typeface itself needs to become part of the animation.

For example:

Normal text → font morph → alternate font → symbol → final font

without creating separate layers.

Music Videos

Marker-driven font changes make it easy to synchronize typography to beats and cuts.

Glitch Typography

Random font switching and Replace mode can create convincing chaotic typography without manually animating every character.

Title Design

You can create sophisticated title transitions where different typefaces progressively take over the same text.

Motion Branding

Brand systems often use multiple typefaces for different purposes. Font Animator can animate between them while keeping the underlying copy editable.

Social Media Graphics

It’s particularly useful for short-form motion graphics where unusual typography changes need to happen quickly.

Font Animator vs Normal After Effects Text Animation

The difference is fundamental.

Normal After Effects text animation primarily animates properties of the characters:

  • Position
  • Scale
  • Rotation
  • Opacity
  • Tracking
  • Blur
  • Fill
  • Stroke

Font Animator adds another dimension:

The typeface itself becomes an animatable property.

That is what makes it interesting.

Workflow Benefits

Font Animator v1.1.23 provides:

  • Multiple fonts in one text layer
  • Range-based font animation
  • Random font distribution
  • Sequential font switching
  • Animated randomization
  • Character/word/line targeting
  • Per-font size controls
  • Per-font tracking controls
  • Per-font colour controls
  • Character filtering
  • Glyph replacement
  • Find-and-replace animation
  • Scramble effects
  • Layer-marker font switching
  • Looping font sweeps
  • Built-in glyph browser
  • Font library search
  • Fully editable text
  • Non-destructive workflow
  • No character splitting
  • No text outlining

Who Should Use Font Animator?

Motion Designers

Definitely. This is the primary audience.

Kinetic Typography Artists

Probably one of the most useful applications because the typeface itself becomes part of the animation.

Title Designers

Useful for creating sophisticated typographic transitions without building massive layer setups.

Broadcast Designers

Marker-based font changes and editable text are excellent for reusable title packages.

Template Creators

The non-destructive workflow is especially valuable when creating templates that need to be modified repeatedly.

Compatibility

Font Animator v1.1.23 supports:

  • After Effects 2024
  • After Effects 2025
  • After Effects 2026
  • Windows
  • macOS

Final Thoughts

Font Animator v1.1.23 is a genuinely useful typography tool rather than another gimmicky text preset.

Its killer feature is simple:

It animates the font itself while keeping the text as one editable After Effects text layer.

The four modes give it quite a lot of range:

Range for controlled font sweeps
Random for chaotic or procedural typography
Replace for symbols, glyphs and character transformations
Marker for beat and timing-based font changes

For motion graphics, I’d put this in the high-value typography utility category. It doesn’t replace After Effects’ native text animators. It adds something they fundamentally don’t do as cleanly: dynamic typeface switching inside editable text.
