AD

AEScripts Mask Color Pro v1.7.2 is a small but highly practical After Effects masking utility designed to solve a surprisingly annoying problem: mask outlines can become almost invisible against the footage you’re working on.

Mask Color Pro automatically analyses the image underneath a mask and assigns the mask a high-contrast outline colour, making masks easier to see while drawing and editing.

Version 1.7.2 was released on August 13, 2026, with improvements to undo handling, stability, and compatibility with other After Effects extensions.

What is Mask Color Pro?

After Effects normally gives masks a limited set of outline colours. Depending on what’s underneath the mask, the selected colour can disappear into the footage.

For example:

  • Green mask on grass
  • Blue mask on sky
  • Yellow mask on highlights
  • Red mask on a red object

Mask Color Pro automatically samples the pixels underneath the mask and chooses a contrasting colour.

So instead of constantly changing the mask colour manually, the script does it for you.

Automatic Mask Coloring

The main feature is automatic recolouring.

When you finish drawing a mask, Mask Color Pro:

  1. Detects the new mask.
  2. Samples the image underneath it.
  3. Determines an appropriate contrasting colour.
  4. Changes the mask outline.

It works with masks created using both the Pen tool and shape tools.

This is particularly useful during long rotoscoping sessions.

Nearby Masks Stay Distinct

Mask Color Pro doesn’t only look for contrast against the footage.

It also tries to keep nearby masks visually distinct from one another.

That’s useful when a composition contains dozens of masks and you need to identify individual paths quickly.

For example, instead of having 20 masks all using similar colours, the script can assign visibly different colours so you can tell which path you’re editing.

Existing Mask Recoloring

You don’t have to enable the tool before creating masks.

Existing masks can be recoloured with a single click.

This is useful when opening an old project where dozens of masks have already been created using After Effects’ default colours.

Manual Color Sampling

Automatic sampling isn’t the only option.

Mask Color Pro also provides manual sampling tools for:

  • The entire frame
  • A selected region

This gives you more control when the automatically sampled area doesn’t represent the part of the image you actually want to use for contrast.

Lightness Control

The plugin includes a Lightness slider that lets you push the generated mask colour toward:

  • White
  • Black

This is useful when you want to preserve the automatically selected hue while adjusting its brightness to make the mask more visible.

Works With Every Shape Tool

Mask Color Pro supports masks created with:

  • Pen Tool
  • Rectangle Tool
  • Ellipse Tool
  • Polygon Tool
  • Star Tool

So you’re not restricted to manually drawn Bezier masks.

Useful for Rotoscoping

This is where Mask Color Pro makes the most sense.

Rotoscoping often involves creating and editing a large number of masks over long periods.

When you’re dealing with:

  • Hair
  • People
  • Objects
  • Moving limbs
  • Complex silhouettes
  • Green-screen footage
  • VFX plates

being able to clearly see the mask path can make the process less frustrating.

Mask Color Pro is therefore less of an “effect” and more of a rotoscoping productivity tool.

High Bit-Depth Support

The script automatically handles:

  • 8-bit
  • 16-bit
  • 32-bit

After Effects projects. It also supports colour-managed projects.

That’s important because the script needs to sample actual frame colours to determine an appropriate mask colour.

Clean Undo Workflow

Version 1.7.2 specifically improves the undo behaviour.

Drawing a mask now adds at most two clearly labelled undo operations:

  • Recolor Mask
  • Sample Frame

Previously, high-bit-depth projects could generate as many as seven unlabeled undo steps.

The update also fixes an issue where undoing during an operation could leave the project’s bit-depth or colour settings in an incorrect state.

Extension Stability

Another important improvement in v1.7.2 is compatibility with other After Effects extensions.

The developer fixed “no response from After Effects” errors that could occur when another installed extension conflicted with AE’s shared scripting engine.

Mask Color Pro is now designed to operate as a fully self-contained extension.

The panel also includes an engine health check in its log for easier diagnostics.

After Effects Integration

Mask Color Pro is designed to fit into the normal After Effects interface rather than introducing a completely separate workflow.

It supports both:

  • Light UI
  • Dark UI

and follows the native After Effects visual style.

Workflow Example

A typical rotoscoping workflow could look like:

Import footage

Draw mask

Mask Color Pro samples the footage

High-contrast mask colour is assigned

Continue editing the mask

Create another mask

New contrasting colour is assigned automatically

This becomes especially useful when you’re creating dozens of masks on a complicated shot.

Workflow Benefits

Mask Color Pro provides:

  • Automatic mask recoloring
  • Contrast-based colour selection
  • Automatic differentiation between nearby masks
  • One-click recoloring of existing masks
  • Manual frame sampling
  • Region-based colour sampling
  • Lightness adjustment
  • Pen Tool support
  • Rectangle Tool support
  • Ellipse Tool support
  • Polygon Tool support
  • Star Tool support
  • 8/16/32-bpc support
  • Colour-management support
  • Clean undo operations
  • Extension conflict resilience

Who Should Use Mask Color Pro?

VFX Artists

Particularly useful for roto and compositing work involving large numbers of masks.

Motion Designers

Useful when building complicated masked animations or shape-based effects.

Rotoscopers

This is probably the best target audience. The more masks you create, the more useful automatic contrast becomes.

Compositors

Useful for keeping mask paths readable while working against complicated footage.

After Effects Power Users

If you spend a lot of time manipulating masks, this is one of those tiny workflow tools that can save constant little annoyances.

What Mask Color Pro Is Not

It’s worth being clear about this.

Mask Color Pro doesn’t:

  • Automatically create accurate roto masks
  • Track objects
  • Remove backgrounds
  • Perform chroma keying
  • Generate mattes
  • Replace Mocha
  • Replace rotoscoping tools

It simply makes the masks you’re already creating easier to see and manage.

That sounds trivial, but during a long roto session it can actually be damn useful.

Compatibility

Mask Color Pro v1.7.2 supports:

  • After Effects 2021
  • After Effects 2022
  • After Effects 2023
  • After Effects 2024
  • After Effects 2025
  • After Effects 2026

It runs on both Windows and macOS and requires Adobe After Effects 18.4 or newer.

The official AEScripts listing currently shows a regular price of $11.99, with a promotional price of $8.99 through August 28, 2026.

Final Thoughts

Mask Color Pro v1.7.2 is a very focused utility, but that’s exactly why it makes sense.

It doesn’t try to reinvent masking. It fixes one annoying part of After Effects:

“I can’t fucking see the mask I’m editing.”

The automatic contrast detection, nearby-mask differentiation, manual sampling, and lightness controls make it particularly useful for rotoscoping and complex masking workflows.

At its core, the workflow is simple:

Draw mask → automatically get a visible colour → keep working.

For occasional masking, you probably won’t care. For someone doing hours of roto or complex compositing, it’s the kind of $10 utility that can pay for itself in reduced friction alone.
