A convincing composite depends on more than simply placing a foreground element over a background. The edges of the subject need to respond to the surrounding environment so that the two elements feel as though they belong together. AEScripts LightWrap v1.0 is designed to simplify this process by wrapping the light and colour from a background layer around the edges of a foreground layer directly inside Adobe After Effects.

Developed by Vankul, LightWrap is a GPU-accelerated compositing plugin that avoids the traditional precomposition workflow. It can work with footage, text, and shape layers while keeping the foreground layer live and editable throughout the composition.

What Is LightWrap for After Effects?

LightWrap recreates the classic light-wrap effect used in compositing to help integrate a foreground subject with its background. It samples a selected background layer and blends its light and colour around the edges of the foreground.

The main difference from a traditional setup is that LightWrap does not require the foreground to be precomposed before the effect can work. The background remains selectable as a live source, and the wrap updates as the foreground moves, scales, or animates.

No Precomposing Required

Traditional light-wrap workflows often involve duplicating layers, precomposing them, blurring the background, and building masks or mattes around the foreground subject. That setup can become difficult to maintain when the composition changes.

LightWrap removes much of this preparation. Artists simply choose the background layer, and the plugin generates the wrap around the foreground directly in the composition.

This makes the effect particularly useful for shots that are still being developed, because the underlying layers remain editable instead of becoming locked inside a complicated precomp structure.

Control the Wrap Radius and Width

LightWrap provides several controls for determining how far the background influence extends into the foreground. Radius, Width, and BG Blur can be adjusted independently to control the size, spread, and softness of the effect.

This makes it possible to create subtle environmental integration or a much stronger, more visible edge treatment.

The Intensity control ranges from 0 to 200 percent, giving artists additional control over how strongly the background colour and illumination influence the foreground.

Seven Blend Modes

The plugin provides seven blend modes: Normal, Screen, Add, Lighten, Soft Light, Overlay, and Multiply.

Having multiple blending options makes it easier to match the light wrap to different types of footage. Screen and Add can produce brighter atmospheric edges, while Soft Light and Overlay can create more subtle integration.

Multiply provides another option when a darker environmental influence is required rather than a traditional bright rim.

Luma-Based Light Wrapping

LightWrap includes a luma-based wrapping system with adjustable tolerance. Instead of treating every part of the background equally, the effect can use luminance information to determine how the surrounding light should influence the foreground.

This can help create a more natural result when only bright areas of the background should contribute strongly to the wrap.

Artists can also disable luma weighting entirely when a more uniform colour-based wrap is preferred.

Optional Light Glow

In addition to the conventional wrap, LightWrap includes an optional Light Glow system. This creates a background-tinted halo around the foreground and provides separate controls for its intensity, size, blend mode, and inside or outside falloff.

This means the glow does not have to be built as another effect layer. It is integrated directly into the plugin and can be tuned alongside the light-wrap settings.

The feature is useful for strong backlights, atmospheric environments, bright windows, explosions, neon sources, or other situations where the foreground should appear to catch surrounding illumination.

Directional Light Control

A particularly useful feature is the Direction control. Instead of wrapping light equally around the entire foreground, artists can restrict the effect to a directional arc.

Center, Angle, Spread, and Falloff determine where the simulated environmental light comes from and how gradually it extends across the subject.

This can produce a more believable result when the background contains one dominant light source, such as a bright sun, window, lamp, or explosion behind the subject.

Background Colour Correction

LightWrap also includes Color Correct controls for modifying the background before its colour is used for wrapping. Artists can adjust Saturation, Exposure, Tint, and Tint Amount.

This is useful when the original background is technically correct but its colour or brightness would create an unsuitable edge treatment. Instead of changing the background itself, the correction can remain inside LightWrap and affect only the light-wrap calculation.

Designed for Live Text and Shapes

LightWrap is not restricted to conventional video footage. It works with text and shape layers, making it useful for motion graphics as well as traditional VFX compositing.

Animated typography can therefore receive environmental edge illumination without being converted into a separate precomp. The same applies to vector graphics and other shape-based elements.

This makes LightWrap suitable for both compositing and graphic-design workflows.

Motion Blur and Track Mattes

The plugin is designed to respect track mattes, Time Remap, and motion blur, including shutter-accurate motion blur.

This is important for moving foreground elements because a light wrap that ignores motion blur can produce edges that look disconnected from the subject.

By accounting for these aspects of the After Effects layer, LightWrap can remain integrated with more complex animation and compositing setups.

GPU-Accelerated Rendering

LightWrap is GPU accelerated, using CUDA on Windows and Metal on macOS, with CPU fallback available for Software Only rendering.

It supports 8-bit, 16-bit, and 32-bit-per-channel projects and Smart Render. This makes it suitable for both fast interactive design work and higher-quality compositing workflows.

In 3D compositions, the developer notes that a real After Effects Camera layer should be present for correct effect positioning.

LightWrap v1.0

LightWrap v1.0.0 is the initial release, published on September 21, 2026. The first version includes live background-based wrapping, seven blend modes, luma weighting, Light Glow, directional control, background colour correction, support for text and shapes, motion-blur handling, and GPU acceleration.

The plugin is currently listed at $35, with a promotional price of $26.99 through October 2, 2026, and a free trial is available.

Compatibility

LightWrap currently supports After Effects 2024, 2025, and 2026 on both Windows and macOS. GPU acceleration is available on compatible CUDA and Metal hardware, with CPU fallback supported.

Who Should Use LightWrap?

LightWrap is particularly useful for compositors, VFX artists, motion designers, editors, and title designers who need to integrate foreground elements into their environments more naturally.

It is suitable for live-action compositing, green-screen work, environmental edge lighting, cinematic titles, animated graphics, and scenes with strong directional backlighting.

Final Thoughts

AEScripts LightWrap v1.0 provides a straightforward alternative to building traditional light-wrap setups from multiple duplicated layers, precompositions, blurs, and mattes. Its live background sampling, adjustable radius and width, luma-based wrapping, directional control, built-in glow, colour correction, and support for text and shapes make it useful across both VFX and motion-design workflows.

The most notable aspect of the plugin is its live approach. Because the foreground does not need to be precomposed, artists can continue moving and animating their layers while the light wrap updates automatically. For compositors looking for a faster and more flexible way to integrate subjects into their backgrounds, LightWrap provides a focused solution that keeps the process inside the After Effects composition.
