AEScripts Flowr v1.0 is a GPU-accelerated 3D plugin for Adobe After Effects that generates oriented, flowing strands and wire-like structures from images, text and 3D models. Curl noise gives the strands a flowing, turbulent quality.

Surface Attraction

Flowr can also make strands respond to the surface from which they originate.

Surface attraction allows you to pull the generated wires back toward the source geometry, creating a balance between outward growth and surface-following behaviour.

This can be useful when creating forms that appear to crawl across, wrap around or grow along an object.

Surface Normals

The model-normal field provides another way to control strand direction.

Instead of relying entirely on noise or a global vector, the strands can respond to the orientation of the underlying surface. This becomes particularly useful when working with 3D models where the desired growth direction should follow the geometry.

Gradient Colouring

Flowr isn’t simply another particle emitter.

Traditional particle systems generally deal with individual particles being emitted into space and controlled through forces.

Flowr instead starts from a surface and grows oriented strands from it. The strands maintain a relationship with their source and can be influenced by multiple fields along their length.

That makes it better suited to things that should look like:

fibers, wires, roots, veins, hair, cables or flowing surface structures

rather than conventional particles.

Who Should Use Flowr?

Motion designers are probably the primary audience. It provides a way to generate complex 3D visuals without leaving After Effects.

VFX artists can use the strands for procedural energy, cables, organic structures and other effects that would otherwise require a separate 3D package.

Title designers can turn text into elaborate flowing structures.

Experimental artists will probably get the most fun out of it because the combination of fields and gradients allows a huge amount of visual experimentation.

Flowr vs Blender

Flowr obviously doesn’t replace Blender.

Blender provides vastly more sophisticated modelling, simulation, Geometry Nodes and rendering capabilities.

The advantage of Flowr is speed and integration with After Effects.

If you’re already building a composition in AE and suddenly need a massive field of flowing 3D strands, Flowr lets you create that effect without exporting the project to Blender, building a Geometry Nodes setup and then bringing the render back.

For a dedicated 3D production, Blender remains much more powerful. For fast procedural motion graphics inside AE, Flowr makes considerably more sense.

Version and Compatibility

Flowr v1.0.0 was initially released on August 17, 2026. The official listing currently supports After Effects 2020 through After Effects 2027.

The listed regular price is $49, with a promotional price of $39 through August 28, 2026. A free trial is also available.

One important licensing detail: the AEScripts page indicates that Floating License use requires a separate Floating License Server, currently listed at $99.99. Standard licensing does not necessarily require that server.

Final Thoughts

Flowr v1.0 is one of the more interesting new procedural plugins for After Effects.

The combination of 3D surface-driven strand generation, multiple force fields, GPU acceleration, gradient colouring, animated growth, masking spheres and depth of field gives it considerably more depth than a simple particle effect.

The particularly clever part is the relationship between the source surface and the generated strands. You can start with a text layer, image, OBJ or primitive, and Flowr turns that source into a foundation for a much more complex 3D structure.

For your After Effects toolkit, I’d put Flowr in the high-value procedural/3D effects category. It isn’t something you’ll use on every project, but when you need flowing wires, organic strands, procedural networks, fibre-like structures or elaborate 3D typography, it can save you from building a much more complicated setup in Blender or another 3D package.

Bottom line: Flowr is basically a procedural 3D strand-generation and flow-field system brought directly into After Effects, and that’s a pretty damn useful capability.
